A Griha Pravesh is the ceremony a family holds before they first move into a new home. Before the furniture arrives and daily life begins, the house is blessed, so that the family enters a home that has already been welcomed and made ready for them.

What is Griha Pravesh?

Griha means home, and pravesh means entry. So Griha Pravesh is the first sacred entry into a new home. Through a series of simple rituals and a havan (fire offering), the family asks for blessings on the house, clears away any lingering negativity, and settles its energies before they begin living there.

Several blessings are sought together: Lord Ganesha is invoked first to remove obstacles; the Navagraha (the nine planets) are honoured for their favourable influence; and Vastu Purush — the spirit of the dwelling and its directions — is worshipped so the home and its occupants live in harmony. A kalash (sacred pot) topped with a coconut and mango leaves stands at the centre as the symbol of abundance and divine presence.

In one line: before you move in, the home is blessed with a havan and prayers to Lord Ganesha, the planets, and the spirit of the house, so you begin life there in peace.

The three kinds of Griha Pravesh

Tradition recognises three situations, each with the same ceremony:

  • Apoorva — entering a newly built home on new land for the very first time
  • Sapoorva — entering an existing home, e.g. after moving or returning from abroad
  • Dwandwah — re-entering a home after renovation or rebuilding (after damage from fire, water, and so on)

Why people perform it

  • A blessed beginning — to start life in the home on an auspicious note
  • Positive energy — to fill the space with harmony and clear away negativity
  • Vastu harmony — to align the home with the natural order for the family's wellbeing
  • Prosperity and protection — for the health, peace, and good fortune of all who live there

When it's performed

Griha Pravesh is performed on an auspicious muhurat — a date and time chosen for its favourable planetary and seasonal alignment — before the family begins living in the home. Acharya ji can help select the right muhurat for your move.

A note on the tradition

Griha Pravesh belongs to the Vastu Shastra tradition, the ancient Hindu science of harmonious living spaces, brought together with the long-standing practices of Lord Ganesha, Navagraha, and havan worship. Behind it is a simple idea: that a home is more than a structure, and is worth welcoming with gratitude and prayer.
