A Birthday Pooja is a way to mark a birthday in the Hindu tradition: alongside the cake and candles, a prayer for health, long life, and protection in the year ahead. It is a warm, family-centred ceremony, and a joyful one.

What is the Birthday Pooja?

In tradition it is known as an Ayushya Havan (or Ayushya Homam). Ayushya means longevity or long life, and a havan is a sacred fire offering. So the Birthday Pooja is a fire ceremony held to ask for long life and wellbeing for the person whose birthday it is.

Like most pujas it begins with Lord Ganesha, invoked to remove obstacles, and the establishing of a kalash (sacred pot). Offerings are then made into the sacred fire while prayers for health, vitality, and a blessed year are recited.

In one line: a birthday is celebrated with a small fire ceremony that asks for long life, good health, and protection in the year ahead.

Why families perform it

  • A blessing for the year — health, happiness, and success in the months to come
  • Long life and vitality — the central prayer of the Ayushya havan
  • Protection — divine shelter from harm and difficulty
  • A meaningful celebration — honouring a birthday with gratitude and prayer, not just festivity

It is an especially nice tradition for children, a way to begin each new year of life surrounded by family and the warmth of the sacred fire.

When it's performed

The Birthday Pooja can be done on the birthday itself by the calendar date. Traditionally, it is considered especially auspicious to perform it on the day the person's birth-star (janma nakshatra) recurs each year. Acharya ji can help identify that day if you would like to follow the traditional reckoning.

A note on the tradition

The prayer for long life is one of the oldest in Hindu practice. The Ayushya Suktam, a Vedic hymn for longevity and vitality, is recited in the havan. Celebrating a birthday this way carries a wish that sits close to the heart of the tradition: that someone dear be granted a long and healthy life.
